14 The Bioelectric Body

Cells maintain electrical differences across their membranes by controlling the movement of charged particles, including sodium, potassium, calcium and chloride ions. These membrane potentials help cells communicate and carry out essential functions.

Electrochemical gradients also support transport across membranes and are part of how nerves, muscles and other tissues work. They depend on organised cellular processes and the body’s regulation of fluids and minerals.

“Bioelectricity” is a useful way to describe established physiology. It does not mean that vague energy claims or consumer devices can diagnose or correct a health condition; such claims need separate evidence.
